The Last of Us Part 1: Artifact Locations

The last of us part 1 Artifacts

The Last of Us Part 1 collectibles are scattered across the remake, including notes, documents, and lore artifacts that tell the game’s tale.

Though not required, finding them adds to your game knowledge and counts towards 100% completion. We’ll show you where to find all of The Last of Us Part 1’s artifact collectibles below.

This guide will also aid players of the Remastered or original 2013 edition, and where things change, we’ll let you know – however they’re typically always in the same room or region, so even those that have been relocated, haven’t been moved far. This guide solely covers artifacts, not other collectibles.

The Last of Us Part 1: Artifacts

The overall number of artifact collectibles in The Last of Us Part 1 is 86, divided among the game’s twelve levels, albeit some are given to you automatically, so it’s actually a few less. Officially, The Last of Us Part 1 Remake splits them as follows:

Hometown: 0

The Quarantine Zone: 7

The Outskirts: 9

Bill’s Town: 11

Pittsburgh: 17

The Suburbs: 10

Tommy’s Dam: 2

The University: 9

Lakeside Resort: 10

Bus Depot: 4

The Firefly Lab: 4

Jackson: 0

It’s crucial to note, though, that you don’t have to find all of them, only the majority of them. Some are handed to you in cutscenes and count towards your collection, while others simply appear in your inventory between levels and must be glanced at to qualify as “found.” The Lakeside Resort level is a good illustration of this; as it begins, you’ll have a bunch of new artifacts in your bag that you haven’t seen previously, but have been collected by the characters nonetheless. With that in mind, we’ll go through all of the artifacts below, level by level, as well as where you can discover all of the artifact collectibles. We’ll also skip the Hometown and Jackson levels that bookend The Last of Us Part 1 because there’s nothing to be found in those.

This section covers the first genuine chunk of gameplay, beginning with the time skip where you play as Joel in the Washington military zone and ending with you sleeping at the safe home and waiting for night to fall in The Last of Us Part 1.

The Last of Us Part 1: The Quarantine Zone – Beyond the Wall

Artifacts #1-2: Boston Q.Z. Map, Military Pamphlet

When you pick up your backpack, these are automatically transferred to Joel’s possession.

Artifact #3: Note to Brother

You’ll ascend some steps shortly after your first encounter with the infected. Turn left and open the door before leaving the building. A note lies on the table by the window in this room.

The Quarantine Zone – The Slums

Artifact #4: Drafting Notice

This difficult to find collectible will be on the ground beside a table shortly after passing through the bus.

Artifact #5: Wanted Poster

Look up from where you received the previous artifact – just a few steps past it, there’s this poster connected to a storage container.

Artifact #6: Warehouse Key

This will be obtained while learning about stealth kills. When you enter the office and take out the thug, he will drop the key on his body.

Artifact #7: Shipping Manifest

Joel will immediately jump down the ledge and into cover when he sees Robert for the first time while hiding from a distance. Moving right from here, look for this item behind the railing and behind the blue dumpster with seagulls on it.

Artifact #8: Dock Notes

Turn right at the forklift upon entering the warehouse before passing the dry-docked boat. Another item is hidden under another blue dumpster on this dead-end street.

The Last of Us Part 1: The Outskirts – Outside

The second major segment of the game takes you from the nighttime safe home to the Capitol Building via the subway.

Artifact #9: Tess’ List

Before exiting the apartment after the cutscene in which you sleep, turn around and look behind you. You can pick up a collectible item near the lamp.

Artifact #10: Patrol Routes Map

After exiting the generator-powered elevator, make an immediate right. A map can be found between two boilers and a pallet, put on your flashlight, it’s dark down here.

The Last of Us Part 1: The Outskirts – Downtown

Artifact #11: Evacuation Leaflet

Tess and Joel will quarrel later, after escaping the military through the storm drains, until she persuades him to accomplish this job. Climb up the broken bridge to the main road; this relic is close to the traffic signal ahead of you, on the right side of the roadway.

Artifact #12: Field Ops Log

You will reach a slanted skyscraper, and as you approach the stairway, you will encounter one of several dead troops. His notes are positioned next to him.

Artifact #13: Firefly Map

After obtaining the revolver, you will descend the entire length of the building’s ruins into a damaged underground. A corpse with a molotov is in front of you; from there, turn right and proceed up the stairs to locate another corpse with an artifact.

Artifact #14: Note to Derek

The next area is packed of clickers and contains stores on both sides. Enter the store on the left and look behind the counter for this relic, which also serves as one of The Last of Us safe codes.

The Last of Us Part 1: The Outskirts – Museum

Artifact #15: Medical Pamphlet

When you utilize a mobile display unit to climb over a semi-truck, turn around as soon as you reach the other side and walk inside the truck to locate this note.

The Last of Us Part 1: The Outskirts – The Capitol Building

Artifact #16: Firefly Orders

You’ll be at the top of some stairs after going over roofs and Tess pointing out the Capitol Building nearby in a cutscene. Head to the bottom, then turn around to find this lying next to a dead body.

Artifact #17: Smuggler Note

You’ll explore a flooded subway after escaping the Capitol Building. After eluding two soldiers, swim ahead to a platform with a corpse and a letter on the left.

The Last of Us Part 1: Bill’s Town – The Woods

Bill’s Town includes everything that happens in Bill’s town, from your entrance in the woods through your hasty escape in a car. This region is a little more open than the others, so you’ll have to wander around a little more to find what you’re looking for.

Artifact #18: Pills Note

You’ll drop down to a little building with a shed in front of it and a sleeping clicker inside after crossing the gate with a plank bridge. Enter the building through the steps, and this note is on the floor in the upstairs office.

Artifact #19: Note to Bob

Make your way down the main street once Ellie opens the gate for you, to the barricade at the end. Another relic is tangled in the barbed wire.

Artifact #20: Perimeter Note

The Marquis Music Store is located on the left side of Main Street (facing down the street). Enter and proceed to the back room, where you will find this message atop a desk.

Artifact #21: Note to Rachel

You’ll end up lowering down to street level and ducking under a wire after obtaining the bow and going over the roofs. Turn left immediately to the door Ellie is concerned about – upstairs on the right-hand table is a note.

The Last of Us Part 1: Bill’s Town – Safehouse

Artifact #22: Bill’s Map

When you enter Bill’s safehouse, which was converted from an old bar, search for the stack of boxes near the bar itself. This sits on top of them, and the first of The Last of Us Training Manuals is included if you want it.

Artifact #23: Fences Note

Do not approach Bill just yet. Turn around and enter the small back room, where you’ll find this next artifact on a small table.

Artifact #24: Hunters Note

After leaving the pub, turn right at the top of the stairs to enter a kitchen. This can be found on a tiny table inside.

Artifact #25: Bombs Note

Bill will take you to another safehouse in a church, where you will be given firearms and a nail bomb. Take a right before the exit window on your way to the top floor of the church to enter Bills’ room. Another relic can be found on his desk.

Bill’s Town – Graveyard

Artifact #26: Boy’s Diary

You’ll reach a relatively safe residence after climbing over a truck and dropping out of a treehouse into a garden. Go inside, up the stairs, and to the right. Another right inside this children’s room will lead you to an artifact by the window.

Bill’s Town – High School Escape

Artifact #27: Note from Frank

Take some time to explore the house before pushing the car. This can be found on a desk in the back bedroom.

Artifact #28: Note from Frank (Crumpled)

Speak with Bill in the garage after obtaining the Note from Frank. In rage, he’ll read the note and toss it on the ground. The note can then be picked up again as another collectible. Pittsburgh is by far the most extensive phase of the game, covering everything from the ambush and decoy by hunters through the hotel, armored car, and nighttime escape with Henry and Sam. When you watch Joel and Ellie jump from a bridge, you can proceed to the next section of the instruction.

The Last of Us Part 1: Pittsburgh – Alone and Forsaken

Artifact #29: Siphon Hose

This will be given to Joel by Bill at the end of the preceding chapter.

Artifact #30: Tourists Manifest

After surviving the initial attack, Ellie will assist you in opening a metal door to enter a gruesome garage. An artifact can be found on the right side of the chamber. You should also pick up one of The Last of Us Tools.

Artifact #31: Ambush Map

Ascend the stairs and proceed straight down the corridor to the other door, where you’ll find a tiny chamber with a workbench for The Last of Us weapon modifications. When you enter, turn around to find this pinned to the wall.

Artifact #32: Lost Hill Note

When you get at the military checkpoint, hop over the right sandbag pile, which is near the graffiti Ellie points out. Look for a well-hidden item in the security booth here.

Artifact #33: Traitors Flyer

After passing through the turnstile, you will be in front of a huge, covered area. Turn around 180 degrees and you’ll see this pasted to the wall.

Artifact #34: Abandon Zone Note

On the ground floor, right side of the bookstore, is a small kitchen for employees, with this message laying on a counter.

Pittsburgh – Alone and Forsaken – continued

Artifact #35: Applicant Checklist

Before going to the top floor of the bookstore, go to the front of the store and look behind the staircase on the right as you enter the main doors (or left if you’re facing back). Another relic can be found on a shelf beneath.

Artifact #36: Lost Areas Map

A little cafe with a shiv door is located in the top corner of the bookstore’s upper floor. Enter to find a plethora of goods and this relic.

Artifact #37: Mother’s Letter

Continue until a small cutscene with hunters taking a plank appears. Make a sharp left to find another shiv door marked with a red “X” and a blue awning. When you enter, you’ll notice a relic atop a chair ahead of you.

Artifact #38: Stash Note

Swim through the green muck to assist Ellie in reaching the plank, then turn left into this underwater storage facility. Swim through it to find yourself in a flooded coffee shop with a stairway in the back. Ascend the stairs and walk the room around to the right to uncover a relic on a desk.

The Last of Us Part 1: Pittsburgh – Hotel Lobby

Artifact #39: Note to Staff

Turn right after avoiding the broken staircase with the ladder. You can access an open suitcase in front of some double doors by shimmying along the edges. This note is contained within that suitcase.

Artifact #40: Hotel Keycard

This may be found in the region where you face the Bloater. Following the removal of all infected, proceed to the higher floor via the stairwell. To discover a security room, follow the rooms as they loop around to the right. This relic is displayed here among a stack of televisions. (Because this unlocks your exit door, you’ll need to get it anyway.) We put up a whole page on The Last of Us keycard and discovering the generator for further information on this difficult location.

Pittsburgh – Financial District

Artifact #41: Fireflies Note

Clear out all the baddies by fighting your way through the plaza where Joel hands Ellie the weapon. A building on the right will sell “Don Fiocchi Subs.” Enter the room and proceed to the back room, the walk-in freezer, where you will find this item on the floor.

Artifact #42: Final Attack Note

After climbing some stairs, you’ll come across two patrolling hunters ahead. This relic can be found at the very end of a long office on the right, behind a desk.

Artifact #43: Mob Attack Note

There will be adversaries on a ledge of the Delta Direct building when you come around a corner street. Enter the building by the left door, the one under the sign, and climb the stairs up. Check behind the registration desk for a hidden artifact once you’ve reached the top floor.

Artifact #44: Truck Note

You’ll pass through the Ration Depot before leaving the area. Enter the building and proceed right beyond the first desk to find an artifact in the main waiting area.

Pittsburgh – Escape the City

Artifact #45: Trial Note

Once entering Henry’s safehouse, proceed straight ahead into a boardroom, with this in the corner next to the table.

The Suburbs – Sewers

The Suburbs chapter actually begins before you reach them, as you wake up on a beach and must first cross some creepy sewers.

The chapter concludes with a sniper area and a cutscene in which things become quite gloomy.

Artifact #46: Boat Note

Ellie will point out a destroyed boat as you go across the beach after fleeing the automobile on the bridge. Climb onboard and open the bridge to find this right away.

Artifact #47: Sewers Note

Make a right at the fork after entering the sewer to find a locked gate. Ellie will open the gate if you send her via the neighboring vent. This can be found on a table inside.

Artifact #48: Trading Note

Open the door on the same platform as the raft in the flooded chamber. Remove the infected dozing inside and proceed to the far rear corner of the room. There are a lot of supplies here, as well as this relic.

Artifact #49: Rain Catcher Note

When you come across a small group of infected after obtaining the Shorty (a favorite The Last of Us weapon), take them out and turn right. Another item can be found atop a covered table in this area full of rain-catching barrels.

Artifact #50: Cornered Note

Head up the curving stairs to the right of the rain-catcher room, and you’ll see a blue door on your left. Open it and proceed to the back left corner, where you will find another item beside a corpse.

Artifact #51: Kid’s Drawing

When separated from Ellie and Henry, this is found in the first large chamber. You’ll travel through what Eric refers to as a “classroom” before exiting the room. This is on the bookcase in that classroom.

The Last of Us Part 1: The Suburbs – Suburbs

Artifact #52: Looting Note

Enter the first open house on the right in the Suburbs and proceed upstairs. It has been relocated somewhat from the original game; go through the door on the right to reach the children’s nursery. This piece of paper is on the cabinet.

Artifact #53: Father’s Note

A little further down the road is this red brick house with an open garage and a workbench. Go inside, upstairs, and look for this relic in the bedroom with the computer desk.

Artifact #54: Survivors Note

Now go to the second level of the house next door, just past the ice cream truck. Enter the bedroom with the safe and look in the back left corner for this.

Artifact #55: Matchbook

As you reach the top of the stairs, proceed to the top floor of the same building to uncover another artifact.

The Last of Us Part 1: Tommy’s Dam – Hydroelectric Dam

Tommy’s Dam is a smallersection divided into two halves: the dam itself, which includes a tour followed by some action, and the ranch, where you travel on horseback for a rescue.

Artifact #56: Power Plant Map

After using the barrier as a bridge and passing the yellow bulldozer, hang left to reach a tiny security facility just before entering the power plant proper. Inside, a map is tacked to the wall.

Artifact #57: Plant Schematics

Stop at the same table where the engineers were examining the plant designs and where there were some The Last of Us supplements later, inside the dam and on your way out during the bandit onslaught. You can now obtain the schematics; after all, they aren’t in use right now.

The Last of Us Part 1: The University – Go Big Horns!

Another larger chapter, the University, plainly refers to everything that occurs within the borders of the university. To begin, you ride up on horseback, and the story finishes after someone gets a serious injury during a conflict.

Artifact #58: Sniper’s Nest Log

When you enter the campus grounds, continue forward but stop before the first barrier that the horse must vault, and turn right into the loading bay with the Flamethrower. Then, walk the steps to the top floor and out onto a balcony. This artifact, as well as various supplies, can be found there.

Artifact #59: Wall Panel Note

Early on, you’ll come upon a gate that requires power to operate. The obvious reason for why it’s busted is on the wall to the left of it.

Artifact #60: UEC Campus Map

Later you’ll hit another depowered gate, and have to crouch through a half-obstructed doorway. Just ahead is another map to stuff in your pocket.

Artifact #61: Student’s Journal

Then proceed upstairs to the second dorm room on the left. One of the drawers on the owner’s desk houses their journal.

Artifact #62: Newspaper Clipping

When you return to the second level of the dorm after dealing with the bloater and clickers downstairs, take a right out of the stairwell and enter the first room on your right labeled Room 205-B. To find this note, take a left inside the dorm room.

The University – Science Building

Artifact #63: Office Recorder

Turn left at the top of the scientific building’s stairs to find two doors: one closed and one open. This relic can be found on a table near a framed picture if you enter through the opening one on the left.

Artifact #64: Fungal X-Rays

Make a left after exiting the tented corridor. These can be found on a counter beside the window.

Artifact #65: Lab Recorder

The monkeys will appear again in the next room. This artifact can also be found on a large table in the center of the room.

Artifact #66: Firefly’s Recorder

Continue toward the next room, and during a cut scene, Joel will pick up a recorder. This will be added to your collection automatically.

Lakeside Resort – The Hunt

The Lakeside Resort is a lengthy chapter with few collectibles because you spend the majority of it playing as Ellie rather than Joel. There are still some “new” collectibles to look back on now that you have access to Ellie’s backpack. This chapter begins with an adorable bunny and concludes with a boss battle and fire in the pub.

Artifacts #67-75:

When the chapter begins, Ellie will immediately have them.

Joel will automatically have this in his possession if you recover control of him following Ellie’s battle with David.

The Last of Us Part 1: Lakeside Resort – Cabin Resort

Artifact #77: Ellie’s Backpack

During your quest for Ellie, Joel will close a door behind him, which you will discover during a cut scene.

Artifact #78: Meat Ledger

Turn right from the shelf with Ellie’s backpack to find another relic on a different shelf in the same chamber.

Bus Depot – Highway Exit

Despite the name, just a little portion of this chapter takes place at the Bus Depot, and this section covers everything from the arrival in Salt Lake City on the highway to Joel and Ellie fighting the stream when they tumble into rushing water.

Artifact #79: Family Photograph

You’ll see an RV on the roadway near the beginning of the chapter. Inside, look for this on a counter.

Artifact #80: Note to Wife

Stick to the left wall when you enter the bus depot proper to reach a pile of luggage. This relic can be found inside an open suitcase.

Artifact #81: Salt Lake Q.Z. Map

When you arrive at the triage area, proceed straight ahead to the farthest medical tent. This is on top of a table inside.

Artifact #82: Joel & Sarah Photo

Ellie will tell Joel she has “something for him” just before leaving the triage. To acquire the photo, turn around and select to speak to her.

The Last of Us Part 1: The Firefly Lab – The Hospital

The Firefly Lab contains the final artifact collectibles and is where you experience all that transpires in the hospital before getting in the car.

Artifact #83: Surgeon’s Recorder

After defeating the adversaries, you’ll enter the West Wing and ascend some steps, blocking them behind you. This will be in front of you on a counter as soon as you exit the stairway.

Artifact #84: Marlene’s Recorder 1

Make two rapid right turns from the stairwell entrance to enter a small area. Another artifact recorder can be found on a desk within.

Artifact #85: Marlene’s Journal

Continue along the tunnel until you reach a big quarantine tent. Inside, another item can be found on a table.

Artifact #86: Marlene’s Recorder 2

Make a right at the first door and open it as you walk down the final corridor to Ellie’s operation room. In here, you’ll locate another relic on a table near the window – the game’s final actual artifact collectible.
