FIFA 23: Top Formations Guide

FIFA 23 Game Plan

FIFA 23 formations are more essential than ever. Players are encouraged to plan offensive and defensive strategy before kickoff.

FIFA 23 doesn’t use common tactics. We spent hours in Ultimate Team, Career Mode, and Seasons to find the best FIFA 23 formations. We’ll show you how to use them, their strengths and weaknesses on this guide.

FIFA 23: 5-2-1-2 formation

FIFA 5212

This formation helps counter attackers. This tactic relies on raiding wingbacks. The dribbling nerf makes it difficult to go past your defender in FIFA 23’s midfield battles. If you play a 5-2-1-2 shape, the wing backs are almost always free to attack.

Even though this isn’t an aggressive shape, be proactive in defense. This year, “Pressure on Heavy Touch” will help you smother the opposition’s slow build-up play. If you want to play it safe, instruct your full backs to “Stay Back While Attacking” and they’ll wait for your command before attacking. Then, release them by pressing L1/LB. Wingbacks must have stamina and a high work rate.

FIFA 23: 4-1-2-1-2 (narrow) formation

FIFA 41212

This controls tempo and frustrates opponents. FIFA 23 is bigger than previous games in the series. This will aid with technique-learning.

Slow buildup should be stressed in tactical instructions, and a bigger striker should be used to keep the ball. This year’s faster interplay will help you manage space and perform passing triangles and combinations. If required, break headers.

Drop back isn’t sporting, but in love and FUT, anything goes. Avoid manually controlling your CDM to secure your defensive zone. We recommend starting with a lower depth level than the default.

Prioritize FIFA 23 midfielders who can pass quickly and accurately. A CAM with agility, balance, and ball control is important in the final third. Fast strikers would be a bonus.

 4-3-3 (flat) formation

FIFA 433

Those who like to attack but don’t care too much about how to do it, In FIFA 23, it’s hard to make a case for formations with a single striker. However, 4-3-3 is an outlier. Before the rainy spells come, crosses that are made at certain angles are very powerful. You should use that to your advantage by putting out two sets of wingers and a tall striker. But because it’s harder to beat a player when you’re going head-to-head with him, we chose the flat 4-3-3 formation for this game. If you’re a winger, having a lot of options in the midfield behind you will make it much easier to keep the pace up and avoid annoying turnovers.

This is about as easy as it gets when it comes to defense. If a full back has a high rate of attacking work, it could leave your defense open, making you an easy target for the other team’s attack.

Think like a striker, then figure out the rest. This formation isn’t as strong as it could be because it doesn’t have a strong forward. With their skill moves, acceleration (which is a little faster than sprint speed right now), and four-star weak foot, the two wingers are what make this 4-3-3 work.

FIFA 23: 4-2-2-2 formation

FIFA 42222

In a 4-2-2-2, you have a lot more freedom to mess up the instructions for the players. If one of your strikers is set to “Drift Wide,” it makes space inside for your narrower CAM to make hay. Add to that the ability to make any side of the field too crowded by telling your wing backs to overlap aggressively.

Trying to protect ourselves: Are we giving up too much? 42202 is the magic number. These two CDMs can’t be bought. Even though there isn’t a lot of room on the field in FIFA 23, their presence helps stop any midfielders from moving forward and blocks most passing lanes. Since you always have four men in reserve, you can make more daring moves.

Even though speed isn’t as important as it used to be, a quick CAM with good dribbling stats could be very useful here. Most of the time, players in the middle of the field have to run long distances. The two CDMs should have a low offensive work rate and high defensive and physical stats like interceptions, defensive awareness, and standing tackles (all 80s or higher).
